MORE THAN A SYMBOL by Suzy Chan

I was invited by the Macau Poster Design Association to participate in the Macau Motion Poster Exhibition.

It is generally known that Macau is a tourist city in the East. It is often referred to as "Oriental Las Vegas"; "The intersection of the West and China"; Exotic cities" and so on. In addition, there are many symbols: Portuguese Egg Tarts, Ruins of St Paul's Cathedral, F1 racing, casino, etc. During the research process, I realized that various symbolic descriptions of this tourist city can increase the speed of communication and attract tourists; on the other hand, the true condition or connotation of the city will disappear with the promotion process. So these tourist attractions have become symbols. And these tourist cities become a big photo board. The purpose of travel has become just to collect these symbols.

I am also thinking of my experience of traveling to different countries: I went to Jungfrau in Switzerland. What impressed me might not be the title of the highest in Europe, but that my iPhone was forced to shut down at the highest peak. ; And I was forced to take pictures outdoors two minutes apart and then return indoors to use the body temperature to warm up the phone and restart it.

Because I have studied in different places since I was young, I always return to Macau during summer vacation. So my deepest memory of the city of Macau has nothing to do with all city symbols. Instead, I was impressed by the typhoons and heat waves that occur during the summer vacation every summer; in these days, the casinos in this city are closed, and I just hide at home and watch the storm through the window.

So I want to create a picture that Covering symbolic landmarks with my personal memories such as typhoons and heat waves, and encourage everyone to explore Macau’s cultural heritage, establish personal routes and personal experiences in the city.
